Uncomfortable

Hello! It’s been so long since I’ve last updated this blog. I really need to get a move on with it. Anyway, I thought I’d share with you all my photos that I took for my final photography project. It’s a project that’s important to me, especially as an Asian American. Below is my artist statement that I wrote for it and the photos.

“Ching Chong mother****er”
Konichiwa, that’s how you say hello, right? Or is it nihao?”
“Who’s that girl? Sushi ass hoe!”
“Where are you from? No, where are you really from?”

What do you say in those moments when your identity has been invalidated? Reduced to stereotypes and assumptions? How do I even respond when these racist statements are said so suddenly? On the outside, I look like I am fine. I have a straight and neutral face. On the inside, however, I am not. I am uncomfortable, confused, upset, and angry.

How would you feel if someone suddenly came up to you and said a racist slur?
